THE REVOLUTION HAS BEEN DIGITIZED

I know you’re probably thinking this is way too “heavy”. Believe me, this was one of those should I or shouldn’t I post’s. I finally decided to go ahead since “Black History Month” has always been about the evaluation of where we’re going, where we’re at and definitely where we’re from. Now what I take from the above document is that within 175yrs, roughly three generations of us growing as a people, we’ve managed to come a long way. We’ve went from not having a voice to quite possibility having the strongest voice in western civilization (Barack Obama). We’ve given birth to such influential genres of music such as jazz, blues, rock n’ roll and of course hip hop, which has grown to become a multi-billion dollar a year corporation. I mean look at the document again and realize we’ve truly come a very long way. And yes I know we still have a lot of ills which need curing in our community’s, that goes without saying. There’s always going to be work that’s needed to be done. I am only here to ask you to put down the out dated beefs, refrain from the childish finger pointing and take a small moment as a family to bask in the greatness of all our truly wonderful accomplishments. For we have indeed come a very long way people.

In keeping step with the topic at hand I put a little compilation CD together to help celebrate our growth as a people. Hope y’all enjoy it.

"ONE DAY IT'LL ALL MAKE SENSE"

This week's top 5 is courtesy of my man ARCEE (Real Frequency) who by his own admission is a "Certified Hip Hop Professional". I myself am still working towards obtaining my certificate. Actually I would have graduated last year had it not been for a rather low mark in the horrorcore rap class. I just can't seem to grasp my head around that whole Gravediggaz, Flatlinaz thing. Who knows, I guess there's always night school. Anyway without any further a due we present to you this week's top 5. As we proceed to keep on, ROCKIN' YOU (insert echo here). I just had to do it.

WEEKLY TOP 5 - DEAD OR ALIVE (ARCEE'S PICK'S)
1) A PRAYER TO MICHAEL VICK AND T.I - JAY ELECTRONICA

"I never got shook up by talks of Illuminati/
I’m from where niggas talk that talk
and walk around the streets all day carrying heat like the human body
"

Lyrics. Maybe that’s the reason this New Orleans native got more buzz than a giant Philishave. Maybe it’s beats from Dilla, Madlib, Mr. Porter and Just Blaze. Or maybe once Erykah Badu starts fucking you, your game reaches new heights. Either way, I can’t wait for the result. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GVN7U4JK

2) MY GIRL - THE BUDOS BAND
You probably don’t know that you’re a fan of The Budos Band. You might know them as the Dap Kings when they back Sharon Jones. They were the Menahan Street Band when Jay-Z jacked them for "Roc Boys". And you may have heard a group called the Daptones write and perform with a little singer named Amy Winehouse, You can find their interpretation of the Temptations classic on their appropriately titled sophmore LP, The Budos Band II. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RDRIHTNJ

3) MY MOMENT (ADVANCE) - GUILTY SIMPSON
I call Guilty Simpson the Nonchalant Menace. He always appears to be on some wild shit, but he’s always just casual about it. I’ve been on this Black Milk joint hard since my man Jay put me up on the official advance. His debut album, Ode to the Ghetto drops March 25th on Stones Throw. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IVROV7SC

4) LOVIN' MAN - EUGENE MCDANIELS
I recently uploaded 1971’s Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse to the ipeezy and rediscovered this joint right here. I must confess I only really valued this album because Tribe used it. Eugene McDaniels was on some revolutionary Bob Dylan meets Gil Scott Heron shit. Timeless. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O7QUBM84

5) HOLD ON - MARVEL
Marvel is one of the truly underappreciated artists in Toronto. Even the people who think they appreciate him don’t really do. Like even as I write this, I’m inclined to criticize the quality of the mix. But Marvel’s cerebral yet graceful delivery dances all over the two-track from Mr. Attic. His words are like puzzles that put themselves together upon multiple listens. Fuck that easily digestible tablet rap. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JO0NX38V

VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE

The 13.7 billion a year corporation known as Valentine’s has recently been destroyed. Analyst are still trying to figure out the cause of this sudden tradegy. All I know is the February 13th thoughts of “what do I get her/him” shall now be a distant memory. The single and separated can now parade around free on that day without any feeling of exclusion from society. To put it you blunt there will be no need to settle in January for fear of being alone in February. People of the world we have now been liberated. Awakening me from this blissful state is an update which filters through on the radio. It seems they have found the assailants responsible for this well needed or vicious attack, depending on which side of the fence you sit. The group of all things is calling themselves T.L.C a.k.a the True Love Committee. Without thinking I start uncontrollably laughing at the irony of the situation. You see it makes perfect sense, the committee will no doubt plead self defense and explain that it’s actually the corporation who’s been secretly trying to kill them for years. “We had no choice it was either us or them” they’ll say. Well enough of the wishful thinking I got a blog to write.

It’s Valentine’s Day and western civilization says as men we should be celebrating those wonderful estrogen filled bodies of mostly water which fill our world with so much joy. Now my defense to that may be “how the hell do you expect me to celebrate such a pagan holiday brought forth by a pedophile who rightfully received his gross & tragic end”. (Do your research people) Unfortunately my girl may not be as concerned with the origins of this particular holiday. So without any further a due, here’s our weekly top 5- valentine’s edition. And by the way I'm definetly a big fan of those estrogen filled bodies of mostly water which fill our world with so much joy.

WEEKLY TOP 5 - VALENTINE'S EDITION
1) WHEN A MAN'S IN LOVE - YAMI BOLO
Recorded on the famous Stalag riddim produced by Winston Riley(same riddim as sister nancy's "bam bam") when he was only 13yrs old. This was olso sampled by KRS 1 for Mad Lion's hit "take it easy."
Without a doubt my favourite reggae riddim of all time.

2) MAHAGONY - ERIC B & RAKIM
I'll never take anything away from Slick Rick's ability to write great stories, that goes without saying. The thing with Rakim though was he was able to paint pictures, no scratch that, he was able to paint masterpieces in your head. This is a brilliant example of his artistry at work.

3) I'M GLAD YOU'RE MINE - AL GREEN
This song has been sampled numerous times including the above mentioned tune. What can ya say when the drums are knockin' like that, but if you can make your way pass the breakbeat you'll come face to face with one truly soulful song.

4) YOU'RE THE ONE FOR ME - D-TRAIN
My uncle used to kill the hell outta this joint. It's cool how in the 80's you could get on some uptempo club sh!t without sounding like you talking to some chick at the strip club. Not that there anything wrong with stripping at the club, especially with the price of tuition nowadays.

5) LOVE, LOVE, LOVE - DONNY HATHAWAY
I was kinda torn between upping this or Ectasy by Ohio Players. I finally decided on this joint taken from the "Extensions Of A Man" lp because I just love faultless vocals. One can only imagine what would drive such a talented artist to take his own life at the upswing of his career. Regardless his memory and music still live on to this day.

ONE GIANT STEP FOR MANKIND

NEIL ARMSTRONG is a dj with the 5th Platoon, a group of turntablist from the NYC consisting of Daddy Dog, Kuttin Kandi, Vinroc, Do Boy, Roli Rho and I.Emerge. The Platoon has been around since the mid 90's where they started off as battle dj's. Since then they'd moved on to more showcase type dj's, who aside from rockin' shows have put out some quality material in the form of mixed CD's. More notably is the work of Neil Armstrong whose craftsmanship is bar none. With that said i'm a little embarrassed to admit that unitl around a year ago I was totally unaware of the CD's he has put out. So in keeping with the whole Valentine's theme I have decided to up these two from his All Out King series. The beats, vocals as well as movie snippets all combine to tell one cohesive story.

WORDS FROM THE EDITOR
As I'm pondering the launch of this blog I find myself trying to write this absoulutely out of this world introduction. It should summarize the various textures and moods which have made music such a focal part of my life. It should be as deep and prolific as the music that will soon follow. It should capitivate you to telephone and tell a friend you've found the answer to utter and total happiness comes in the form of a url. If only I had the passion for writing as I do for music maybe then the words would fall into place. Without any real thought it comes to me. Actually scratch that, for it's more like it was here all along, the answer that is. This isn't Chris Angel's smoke and mirrors, this isn't 250k into marketing, this isn't even about spins or downloads. No this is where we give the power back to the rightful owners. In closing, this is where we let the music speak for itself. No introduction needed people. We're here now, simple because we never left.

WEEKLY TOP 5 - DEAD OR ALIVE
1) MOSHITUP - JUST ICE FT. KRS ONE

This is the joint we would use to tune up our system when we were paying our dues in the late 80's (peace to Kevin Brown). Turn it up loud and you'll see why. This is definetly one of the finest examples of how to walk the line between dancehall and hip hop without sounding forced. Sound bwoy buriel is still number 1.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UU8BKZAI

2) 90% Of Me - KARIME KENDRA

I found out about this at amonsieurwillyworld.blogspot.com. This is a beautiful dancehall cover of the smash hit by Gwen McCrae. They also had posted another version by The Dynamics but I find this version to be sonically superior.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I8D250YC

3) THE HEALER - ERYKAH BADU

A bangin' joint off the upcoming Erykah Badu album entitied "Amerykah" due out late this month. I definetly diggin' this alot more than the "honey" joint she dropped a while back (even though the video for "honey" is dope as hell). Madlib killed the production without question.

4) THE HARDEST PART - CURTIS ANDERSON

Killer rare groove joint from 1982 which came out on the Brown Bag Label. It's a beautiful marriage when a song's beats and it's words are both equally as heavy. This was later recorded by Donald Albert but nothing beats the original. Matter of fact I think I'm gonna dub this the "bad break up" anthem of the century.

5) BABY LET'S DANCE TOGETHER - KITTU

I found this on a compilation entitled "Bollywood Funk," which came out a couple of years ago. The original appears on the "Shalimar" soundtrack which is a rare piece of vinyl to obtain. The song has so many elements fused into it yet at the same time it's so minimal. Brilliant!

88 FACTS OF LIFE (FACT 1)

It took Grand Master Flash only two takes in the studio to record the ground breaking " Wheels of Steel." He used three turntables and two mixers for the recording, which by the way was done straight through without any punch ins. Remarkable.
